Engine: Yamaha 8 Repair difficulty: Medium Repair time: More than 4 hours Repair symptoms: Corrosion causing siezing of drive shaft Used a custom puller to get the lower leg apart. As the shaft was seized into the engine lower seal housing, the pump housing was damaged beyond repair as the shaft pulled out of the pinion. A different custom puller was used to pull the shaft out of the seal housing. Scoring of the shaft was polished out and the lower leg was re-assembled with new seal housing, pump housing, pinion retaining clip and associated gaskets and seals. Application of etch prime paint, waterproof grease and re-direction of some of the exhaust, were used in an effort to slow the rate of corrosion. note that the outboard is only 4 years old, is always flushed after use and is stored upright.
