To install a new shift rod boot on a Yamaha outboard, remove the lower unit to access the shift rod, then slide off the old boot and clean the sealing surface thoroughly. Inspect the shift rod for corrosion, then lightly coat the new boot with marine grease or sealant and slide it into place, ensuring the flanged side seats fully into the housing. Apply a small bead of marine sealant around the edge for a watertight seal, reinstall any retaining clip if applicable, and reassemble the lower unit, making sure the shift linkage is properly aligned before tightening everything down.
