Engine: Yamaha 75HP Shopping experience: I was uncertain if ordering from the US to Europe would work out. It was a big order, for lots of old parts for a Yamaha 75HP engine from 1983. Thankfully Crowley Marine had everything I needed for a lower mount rebuild. The parts were approximately half the price compared to other European suppliers. Although the import tax was approximately 25% (to Sweden) it was still a significantly better deal. To be on the safe side, I ordered some parts from a Swedish supplier as well, amazingly both shipments arrived on the same day, a very quick service! There was also an issue with my payment address, immediately customer services were in touch and I managed to sort it out in a few emails. A very good service all round. Repair difficulty: Medium Repair time: 2 to 4 hours Repair symptoms: Forward and reverse gears would not select The engine was running, however the forward and reverse gears would not engage. The gear shifting rod had corroded so bad, there was approximately half the rods cross sectional area at the bottom at lower welded joint. This resulted in the rod twisting as torsion was applied to select forward and reverse gears. The rotational motion at the top of the rod was not being transferred completely to the gears at the bottom of the rod. To replace the rod the power head was removed. Whilst inspecting the rod /lower casing, it was clear that the lower mount rubber bushes were shot. The aluminium had corroded extensively, approximately 5 bolts snapped during the disassembly. These bolts were all drilled out, helicoils inserted and tightened back up to the correct torque. The biggest issue whilst taking the engine apart was the uncertainty regarding the state of each bolt and the time required to drill them out. Eazy outs are a waste of time in this scenario.
