Engine: 1992 Yamaha 40HP 40PLRQ Shopping experience: Very easy to find the right parts, shipped quickly, perfect fit. Repair difficulty: lProfessional Repair time: More than 4 hours Repair symptoms: Trim motor failed Trim motor failed and I needed to replace. 4 of the 5 bolts holding the trim motor onto the reservoir stripped; used a stuck bolt remover and 2 of the 4 heads sheared off, 2 I was able to remove. Had to take the whole trim motor & reservoir unit off the piston; well, 2 of those 3 stripped, and 1 of those 2 sheared off. Not only that, but the bracket holding the motor on was corroded to heck and broke off. Skip forward once we got that off, had to hammer and chisel the reservoir body off the base since the 2 stuck bolts, though not threaded in the reservoir body, were essentially welded in place with the nasties. After a couple hour fight, we broke the bolt off and were able to move to the fun part: using the drill press to drill out those 3 stuck bolts, 2 of them being almost 3" long, due to corroded nasties all in the reservoir body and base that completely locked the bolts in. No matter what we tried, couldn't get them out without drilling all the way through. Ended up damaging some of the base threads; ran taps through, but they were too far gone. Put it back together with the new trim motor just to see, and success! Goes up and down, but leaks pretty good out the corner that we knew we jacked up bad since both bolts in that corner were stuck/drilled and the bracket broken. Pulled the one lower bolt out, filled it with JB KwikWeld, all around the area, clamped the bolt into the stripped base while it dried and set overnight. Overall it's working, but remains to be seen if it'll work forever. If I could have bought the whole assembly, even if it was $500, probably would have, however these parts aren't available anymore. Needed >>$1,500 in tools to do the job. Oh well. Got the O-ring I needed from Crowley, and seems like we're lucky for now. Fingers crossed long term.
